Stars Exhibit @ Mori Art Museum

After learning that this exhibit was featuring six artists from Japan, I knew that the Stars Exhibit at the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi was a must see for me! Even though I was only familiar with two of the artists, Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama, I quickly became a fan of one more, Yoshitomo Nara.

I had seen other exhibits over the years of both Murakami and Kusama, but the works on display in this exhibit were new to me. It was exciting to see pieces that were completely different from the others that I had seen, like Kusama's protrusion pieces. There were other artists featured in the exhibit, Lee Ufan, Tatsuo Miyajima, and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Not that there was anything wrong with them, but they just didn't happen to "float my boat" if you know what I mean.

The new artist that I did however really enjoyed was Yoshitomo Nara. His works featured a lot of simple drawings and paintings of somewhat cartoonish figures, kind of childlike, big-headed and dream-like. Obviously, I really can't describe his work to do it justice. From what I just described, you probably aren't rushing to open a new browser tab so that you can Google Nara's work, but you really should! And if you do, I'd love to know how you'd describe it. My favorite piece was just a small framed drawing of a young girl's face with the word 'crap' written next to it. I don't know exactly know why it struck something in me, but I found it to be quite quaint!
