TeamLab Borderless
I couldn’t stop saying it….”Wow”
From the moment I walked thru the black curtain and entered a technicolor dream, every where I looked, I was awestruck. Every surface from the floor, to the walls (obviously), the ceiling, and even on the clothes and faces of every other person in the room were bathed in light. Every inch of space inside of the whole space was responsible for creating the experience—it truly was borderless. The animations spread from one room to the next creating continuity throughout the whole exhibit. The soundtrack was an extension of the visuals and also carried over.
There was no map. I was lost, but not bothered. You just aimlessly wondered from room to room, down long halls, not sure if you’d been there before because the visuals surrounding you have changed. I was asking myself….”is that the same moose I saw before?”
The majority of the exhibit you can just walk around on your own at your own pace. There are several rooms with installations in them that you have to wait in line to see because of they only let so many people in at a time (for example, I had to wait for about an hour to enter the Forest of Resonating Lamps). And if I had one complaint that would be it….too many people. (**seriously though, when do you do anything in Tokyo that doesn’t involve too many people, I need to adjust my expectations!) I wish that the tickets were set for entry at a specific time so that they could control how many people where in the exhibit at once, but even with the big crowds, I recommend going.
Borderless is the exhibit in Odaiba, but TeamLab has lots of installations, more in Tokyo and also other places in Japan, as well as Singapore, Shanghai, Macao, and Melbourne. I took some photos and videos, but nothing captures the real experience. It is truly something you have to see for yourself to appreciate. The tickets were a smidge over $30 a person, but its worth every penny!
