100 meters of Takashi Murakami
Takashi Murakami is an internationally acclaimed, Japanese contemporary artist. The 500 Arhats exhibit at the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills showcased Murakami’s 100 meter long painting with the same name. The 500 Arhats is one of the largest paintings ever produced in the world’s art history. After this exhibit was recommended by a friend, I decided to check it out for myself. I’m glad I did. Seeing his works up close and in person is so much better than any photograph or reproduction.
There is a lot that could be written about Murakami and his contributions to the art world, as well as this specific piece, The 500 Arhats….but fear not for I will not! I realize that as a former art student, I may relish in the nuance of details, technique, and cultural aspects of his work, and probably find it far more interesting than some others. In much the same way as others may appreciate the play by play of a sports game, or ingredients in a recipe, or what type of engine is in a car—different strokes for different folks!
Regardless of how deeply, or not, you wish to appreciate Murakami’s work, I do think it is appealing to everyone. The size of the piece alone is impressive! As are the bright colors he uses, the specific style of characters he has created—something for everyone to enjoy, including 3-D sculptural pieces. If you ever have a chance to see this exhibit or any of his works, I highly recommend it because even if you don’t really give a hoot about the “art”, it’s still really stinking cool to look at!
